She certainly proved them wrong.
Gravitating towards artists that fuse a variety of genres in their music, as well as fearlessly explore a broad range of subject matter, such as Amy Winehouse, Phoebe Bridgers, Lizzy McAlpine, and Adele, the tender warmth flowing through Catterina’s music emerged once she began to settle into her own artistic identity.

Pacifico Rik Ferrell got his musical start in historic Annapolis, MD with the infamous Dead String Quartet, a staple of the city's "Crabcore" underground Punk/Alternative scene, along with The Hated and Spastic Rats. When DSQ disbanded, Rik became a founding member of Stagger Stagger Crawl, and then went on to front outlaw country fan favorite the Roadhouse Clams, performing up and down the East Coast, and producing several classic albums that continue to receive radio airplay. But his musical tastes were constantly involving. "I never met a genre I didn't like", he jokes. "Growing up, I was a huge fan of the older pre-1980 Stones, plus The Clash, Beatles, Pink Floyd, Allmans, Pretenders, but I also was listening to great groove stuff like P-Funk, Peter Tosh, and Prince, and my Cuban-born dad's vinyl like Santana, Mancini, Harry Belafonte, and John Coltrane. And then my father-in-law showed me the world of old-school country and I was floored by the great storytellers like Waylon & Wille, Tom T Hall, Johnny, Roger Miller, Marty Robbins, John Prine, Jerry Jeff... and there's a ton of great newer artists that I love, like Alabama Shakes, St Paul & the Broken Bones, the Heavy Heavy, and Sturgill Simpson. And all of that mishmash seems to surface in my writing, most of the time all on its own. Lyrically, I love Paul McCartney's phrasing, and the ability of the aforementioned troubadours, plus folks like Townes Van Zandt, to cut thru the BS to get to the meat of the point." In Spring 2017, Rik & his wife sold their Eastern Shore home and headed south to Ft Myers Beach, FL, to get away from Mid-Atlantic winters and focus on his solo career with his new band Rik Ferrell & the Borrowed Stars. "I grew up on and around the Chesapeake Bay and I'll always love it. But when I realized I could perform open air all year round, with palm trees and clear blue water as the backdrop, it was an easy sell for my Caribbean bloodline." These days, Rik does the festival and tiki bar circuit from Tampa Bay to Key West.
While he is only 17 years old, he has been playing and entertaining for more than half his life. Nate has always wanted to perform and got his first guitar at the ripe age of 7. He enrolled with a guitar teacher where he learned guitar from a book. Within a year he wanted to switch to a more hands-on learning approach. From there he found an open jam session at a local store, Victor Litz, and would go on to join a rock ensemble group program where he learned how to actually play songs. His passion for music grew and he wrote a song called “Something Big” at age 8. Nate has never had any fear of performing or large crowds and took every opportunity to perform any chance he got.. whether it was county fair, with other bands in restaurants or bars while on vacation, or simply busking in crowded areas at 11 years old.
Today Nate is 17 years old and his passion for music has only grown. He has expanded his involvement with music participation. He is well versed in vocal/harmony/guitar, bass, drums, and learning the keys. He currently plays around Maryland mostly in the Annapolis/Baltimore area and Ocean City. In addition to singing and playing multiple instruments, Nate had been getting into the production side of music. He creates his own music and collaborates with other musicians creating music for shared projects or separate artists’ projects.
Whether scrawled in a handwritten diary, committed to the pages of a book, or posted online, an authentic story will resonate. From a stark and stripped-down perspective, Elliot Greer delivers unfiltered truth with grizzled, yet warm intonation accompanied by acoustic guitar. For as much as he harks back to an old school troubadour tradition, his appeal transcends eras. As such, he asserts himself as the rare singer-songwriter who can cut through the noise on social media with tens of millions of views or pack a residency gig on a weekly basis. Growing up in Scotland, he attended the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York city and later landed a part in Glen Hansard’s Once in upstate New York —only for COVID to shut down the production before it got off the ground. Armed with a basic $100 microphone purchased by his girlfriend, he wrote, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered his independent debut, Handcrafted, in the bathroom of his apartment. Simultaneously, he gigged nonstop, busking in Central Park, performing anywhere around town, and joining Ashley McBryde and John Osborne for a performance on The Tonight Show at Jimmy Fallon. In 2022, he launched a TikTok account and broke through with the single “Bleed.” A video of Elliot with an acoustic guitar singing his soul out caught fire, reeling in 8 million views on Instagram and 5 million on TikTok. Now, Greer forges a lasting connection on a series of 2023 singles for Arista Records and much more to come.

Enthralled with the music of Crowded House, Paul Simon, The Beatles and dozens of other similar musicians and bands, Dan’s songwriting continued to evolve throughout his post-college years. Those productive years resulted in a few hundred songs of longing and love, cars and girls. Soon he formed two bands, Ben’s Bones and The Dan Haas Band. For several years, Dan & the Bones held a Monday night residency show where Dan would unleash a new song or two a week for his band to perform live, for the first time, right there on the spot. Spontaneous, with results that were always surprising. Over the years, Dan has been lucky enough to work with talents like Jim Creegan (Barenaked Ladies), Joe Pisapia (Guster, kd Lang, Joe, Marc’s Brother, Ben Folds, The Silver Seas), Josh Rouse, and David Mead.
Since starting a family, Dan has continued writing and performing songs, with topics ranging from pandemic yearnings, to raising kids, sorties of fact and fiction, and of course, fantasy and his love of birds. Dan’s style falls nicely into the “Melodic Pop’ catefory, with tinges of Americana, Brill Building Pop, Rock and even Alternative. He wrties primarily on guitar with the occasional song emanating from is ukulele, bass, and mandolin. Much like his musical heroes and inspirers, he is clearly a fan of lush harmonies, rich string arrangements, & thick synths and soothing Wurlitzer & Rhodes.

- Raul Campos, KCRW 89.9FM Los Angeles
Great songwriters are often gifted with the ability to spin tales, to imagine characters and fabricate fantastic details of their lives. Alec Lytle is no such songwriter. Woven of his own loves, losses, triumphs and missteps, his songs ring honest and carry the character and mood of the redwood forest where he lives and writes. The husband and father of two lives with his family in a house he designed and built on a plot of land in the rural Northern California coastal mountains—an area with a rich history, including Ken Kesey’s acid tests and the more than 20 albums recorded by Neil Young at his iconic ranch. Here, he wrote his debut album, The End of Ours (2015) and his Last record, The Remains of Sunday (2020).
Lytle, previously an upright bassist, sideman, and harmony singer, is un-beholden to the formulas that typify singer-songwriters in folk and Americana music. His lyrics tell compelling, clear, relatable stories, always true and angularly referenced, inviting listeners to relate and apply their own meaning; his sound propels them into swirls of sensation, allowing them to tap into a vibrant, immersive experience with his music.
Alec is currently working on his third record slated for a 2024 release.
Jesse Lynn Madera is a multi-faceted singer-songwriter who weaves a blend of pop, folk, blues, Americana, and jazz influences into her piano-driven compositions. Her vocals are powerful and haunting in one instant, and light, whimsical, and sweet in the next as she moves seamlessly and effortlessly across genres. A brief listen to just a few of her songs-the accordion-driven, colorful, and catchy “¡Hola Papi!"; the melodic, optimistic, acoustic pop sounds of “Revel;” and the dramatic virtuosic “Dante”–immediately telegraphs that this is an artist who goes where her muse takes her.
“I love so many genres,” says Madera. “When I sit down at the piano to write, it’s a mixed bag. To me, music is music, and I go with how I’m feeling in that moment. The simple truth of human emotion and experience creates an endless palette. I listen to all kinds of different music and my influences are equally diverse. Inspiration is everywhere!”

In James McMurtry’s new effort, The Horses and the Hounds, the acclaimed songwriter backs personal narratives with effortless elegance (“Canola Fields”) and endless energy (“If It Don’t Bleed”). This first collection in seven years, due August 20 on New West Records, spotlights a seasoned tunesmith in peak form as he turns toward reflection (“Vaquero”) and revelation ( closer “Blackberry Winter”). Familiar foundations guide the journey. “There’s a definite Los Angeles vibe to this record,” McMurtry says. “The ghost of Warren Zevon seems to be stomping around among the guitar tracks. Don’t know how he got in there. He never signed on for work for hire.”
The Horses and the Hounds is a reunion of sorts. McMurtry recorded the new album with legendary producer Ross Hogarth (John Fogerty, Van Halen, Keb’ Mo’) at Jackson Browne’s Groovemaster’s in Santa Monica, California, a world class studio that has housed such legends as Bob Dylan (2012’s Tempest) and David Crosby (2016’s Lighthouse) as well as Browne himself for I’m Alive (1993) and New Found Glory, Coming Home (2006). McMurtry and Hogarth first worked together 30 years ago, when Hogarth was a recording engineer in the employ of John Mellencamp at Mellencamp’s own Belmont Studios near Bloomington, Indiana. Hogarth recorded McMurtry’s first two albums, Too Long in the Wasteland and Candyland, for Columbia Records and later mixed McMurtry’s first self-produced album, Saint Mary of the Woods, for Sugar Hill Records. Another veteran of those three releases, guitarist David Grissom (Joe Ely, John Mellencamp, Dixie Chicks), returns with some of his finest work.
Accordingly, the new collection marks another upward trajectory: The Horses and the Hounds will be McMurtry’s debut album on genre-defining Americana record label New West Records (Steve Earle, Rodney Crowell, Lucinda Williams, John Hiatt, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Buddy Miller, dozens more).
“I first became aware of James McMurtry’s formidable songwriting prowess while working at Bug Music Publishing in the ’90s,” says New West president John Allen. “He’s a true talent. All of us at New West are excited at the prospect of championing the next phase of James’ already successful and respected career.” McMurtry perfectly fits a label housing “artists who perform real music for real people.” After all, No Depression says of the literate songwriter’s most recent collection, Complicated Game: “Lyrically, the album is wise and adventurous, with McMurtry — who’s not prone to autobiographical tales — credibly inhabiting characters from all walks of life.” “[McMurtry] fuses wry, literate observations about the world with the snarl of barroom rock,” National Public Radio says. “The result is at times sardonic, subversive and funny, but often vulnerable and always poignant.”
His lauded storytelling — check out songs such as “Operation Never Mind” and “Ft. Walton Wake-Up Call” on The Horse and the Hounds— consistently has turned heads for decades now. “James writes like he’s lived a lifetime,” said John Mellencamp back in 1989, when Too Long in the Wasteland hit the Billboard 200. “James McMurtry is one of my very few favorite songwriters on Earth and these days he’s working at the top of his game,” says Americana all-star Jason Isbell. “He has that rare gift of being able to make a listener laugh out loud at one line and choke up at the next. I don’t think anybody writes better lyrics.” McMurtry’s albums Just Us Kids (2008) and Childish Things (2005) back the claim, each scoring endless critical praise. The former earned McMurtry his highest Billboard 200 chart position in two decades (since eclipsed by Complicated Game) and notched Americana Music Award nominations. Childish Things spent six full weeks topping the Americana Music Radio chart in 2005 and 2006, and won the Americana Music Association’s Album of the Year, with “We Can’t Make It Here” named the organization’s Song of the Year.
Other accolades include a 1996 Grammy nomination for Long Form Music Video for Where’d You Hide the Body and an American Indie Award for Best Americana Album for It Had to Happen (1997).
McMurtry tours year-round and consistently throws down unparalleled powerhouse performances, reflected in the release of two live discs: the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records, and 2009’s Live in Europe, which captured the McMurtry band’s first European tour and extraordinary live set. Along with seasoned band members Ronnie Johnson, Daren Hess, and Tim Holt, Live in Europe features special guests Ian McLagan (Faces) and Jon Dee Graham (True Believers, Skunks). (Video of the performance is available on the included DVD.)
“Lyrically gritty, musically gutsy, go tell ‘em all…we need James McMurtry bringin’ us more.” —Andrew Farrris, INXS
“James McMurtry may be the truest, fiercest songwriter of his generation” —Stephen King

You may have seen acoustic artist Angie Miller performing her original music at clubs, coffeehouses, festivals and colleges throughout the mid-Atlantic region where she has carved out her reputation as a performer and songwriter who knows “how to capture an artist,” as Washington Post’s Maria Villafana says. Echoing the styles of Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, and Patty Griffin, Angie's lyric-driven songs tell a story. Her Americana musical style draws from folk, country, rock, and jazz influences, “stirring up a spicy gumbo of songs,” says Annapolis publication Bay Weekly. Most recently, Angie has joined forces with songwriter Tony Denikos in a project that explores family stories from a collection of memoirs from Angie’s father, Mike Miller. Angie hosts a songwriter showcase in Annapolis – “Second Monday at 49 West” – and loves celebrating the wealth of talent this area has to offer.

Dan Navarro’s music probes life at its most resonant. In his rich baritone, he sings songs of heart and insight, steeped in experience, soulful tales from a long road well-traveled.
A show-stopping vocalist and sharp songwriter, Nick Norman brings humor, heart, southern storytelling, and soulful swagger to the country genre. It's a sound that began taking shape in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, where Nick grew up listening to a soundtrack of home-state heroes — including Edwin McCain and Hootie & the Blowfish — and icons like Stevie Wonder and The Band. He soaked it all up, mixing the rootsy sounds of the FM dial with the awe-inspiring power of the gospel singers he'd hear every Sunday morning at the local church.
A lifelong friend and collaborator of country star Lee Brice, Nick began recording songs as a teenager, working inside a makeshift studio that he constructed with Lee in the pump house of a local church camp. He later moved south to Key West, where he established himself as one of the area's strongest draws. Even so, it was his newest album that brought him back to Nashville, where Nick recorded a batch of raw, rootsy songs — including several tracks co-written with his childhood friend, Lee — in Zac Brown's Southern Ground Studio. Produced by Lee Brice, Rob Hatch, and Elisha Hoffman, Nick Norman isn't just Nick's strongest effort to date; it's also the first release on Pump House Records.

The One Eighties is a name that suits Autumn Brand and Daniel Cook down to the core. After garnering high praise with their former band New Reveille from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and CMT, they were just starting to make waves in the music world. But like many a common tale, their record label closed down, the pandemic hit, and the band went their separate ways. At that point, the chronically indecisive pair pulled a “one-eighty” and changed the course of their musical lives, energized by the challenge of setting out on their own as a duo. Their debut album “Minefields” ventures into new musical territory, combining traditional roots instrumentation with soaring 80’s synths, “space-country” steel guitars, and layered strings reminiscent of early film-noir. Look for new tour dates to be announced for the fall of 2023.
Jacob Panic is a banjo artist and singer-songwriter from Maryland. He is a proudmember of the Gold Tone Artist Roster, andplays an ML-1 baritone banjo. Abe Partridge is a heralded musician, singer/songwriter, visual artist, and podcaster based in Mobile, Alabama. His 2018 debut, Cotton Fields and Blood For Days earned him rave reviews, with Tony Paris saying in The Bitter Southerner: "He plays guitar the same way he writes lyrics, bashing the strings with abandon until they are just about to come loose, then beautifully picking the notes until every last word falls into place. More to the point, Partridge writes to make you sit up and think. He wants to jar your reality. Sometimes, his lyrics are sly and subtle. Sometimes they come at you with a roar and thunder, as if the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse were approaching, and the heavens were opening up to herald a warning."

When music is given the benefit of instinct, imagination and inspiration, the results are guaranteed to be good. So it ought to come as no surprise that the critically-acclaimed Annapolis Maryland-based trio, appropriately dubbed Pressing Strings, has infused those elements within their musical mantra the beginning. The band —Jordan Sokel (Guitar/Vocals), Nick Welker (Bass, Vocals), and Justin Kruger (Drums, Vocals) can trace its origins to Sokel’s initial fascination with some iconic influences, among them, the usual suspects — Dylan, Marley, Simon, Withers, Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, etc., as well as some more under the radar artists like Taj Mahal, R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, and Nick Drake.
“This band has had a lot of different parts and personalities over the years and if you listen closely, you can hear that in the music,” Sokel reflects. “It’s never been static; the chemistry and creativity has morphed and evolved and it’s still doing so now. However it has changed, one thing has stayed constant. Music has moved and motivated me ever since the first time I realized I could write songs and share them with an audience. That’s been my motivation ever since I was 20 years old and had my first opportunity to perform in front of a live audience. And after I learned how to record and shape songs in the studio, that was it, I was hooked.

Magnolia, the debut EP from Bonnie Stewart, introduces a lyric-driven singer/songwriter whose music bridges the gap between Americana's past and present. It's an ethereal sound rooted in the influence of her parents' timeless record collection — including Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, and other classic craftsmen — with arrangements whose lush, atmospheric sweep nods to the modern day. Gluing that mix together are Stewart's aching vocals and sharply-written insights of life, love, and lingering memories we all carry with us.
Moving to Music City halfway through college, Stewart sharpened her songwriting skills by playing shows around town and taking courses at Belmont University. She also felt an affinity for locals like Kacey Musgraves, whose music blurred the lines between gauzy Americana, country, and modern pop. Stewart developed a unique sound that also shrunk the distance between genres, creating homemade demos on her own and eventually partnering with local producer/writer Oscar Charles to create Magnolia.

Country Music Hall of Famer, five-time Grammy-winner, and AMA Lifetime Achievement honoree Marty Stuart picks up where he left off on Altitude, his first new album in five years, exploring a cosmic country landscape populated by dreamers and drifters, misfits and angels, honky-tonk heroes and lonesome lovers. There’s a desert flare to the music here, a sweeping, spacious feel that conjures up wide-open horizons and endless stretches of two-lane highway, and the production is raw and cinematic to match, tipping its cap both to Bakersfield and Laurel Canyon as it balances jangle and twang in equal measure. While it would be easy for an artist as accomplished as Stuart to rest on his laurels, Altitude instead showcases the work of a searcher with an insatiable appetite for growth and reflection, one whose ambition, much like his keen wit and rich imagination, only seems to grow with each and every release.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, MS, Stuart got his start in bluegrass legend Lester Flatts’ band at the tender age of thirteen, and by twenty-one, he was working in the studio and on the road with Johnny Cash. Though Stuart built his early reputation backing up royalty, it wasn’t long before Nashville recognized him as a star in his own right, and over the course of forty-plus years as a solo artist, he would go on to release more than twenty major label albums, scoring platinum sales, hit singles, and just about every honor the industry could bestow along the way.

J. Coursey Willis is a haunting figure in the alternative rock scene, known for his poignant lyrics, brooding sound, and galvanizing performances. Born on the banks of the Delaware River, he was adopted and raised on Kent Island, Maryland, where he found solace in the small town’s muddy roots. Growing up, Willis was drawn to the moonlight and macabre, discovering comfort in the darkness and channeling it to write music, an outlet to process his pain and trauma.
With a voice reminiscent of Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley, Willis captivated audiences during his early shows in dive bars and seedy clubs. They appreciated his raw honesty and introspective songs filled with tales of torment, tragedy, madness, and nostalgia. Despite spending a decade at the National Security Agency, Willis remained committed to music and released his debut EP, Missing October, in 2015. It features Bryan Ewald of PRS Guitars and Rami Jaffee of Foo Fighters.
Spurred by its success, Willis quit the NSA in pursuit of music and caught the attention of Candlebox guitarist and producer Island Styles. Together, they solidified his signature sound, delving deeper into the depths of the human psyche with the release of Isolation Diaries, a collection of moody melancholic singles created during COVID quarantine.
The chemistry continued when Willis formed a studio production team with members of Candlebox and Jimmie’s Chicken Shack, which doubled as his touring band, and began releasing music monthly. His most successful single to date, “Niles,” has been likened to a modern-day “Ballad of Curtis Loew.” He also co-wrote two well-received singles, “Goodbye Man” and “Am I Even Here,” with L.A.-based songwriter, filmmaker, and producer Jack Piatt.
Currently, Willis is working on his most ambitious project yet, Midnight Sirens, and releasing a collection of singles called Chronicles of Her. He has performed alongside musical greats like Days of the New, Seven Mary Three, L.A. Guns, and Blackfoot, as well as up-and-comers Daphne Eckman, Kavoossi, and Skribe.
